BY JOHN WERU,NAIROBI,28TH NOV 2017-The memorial service that the opposition coalition NASA plans to hold in memory of those who died due to violence that rocked the country during the electioneering period on Tuesday at Jacaranda grounds in Embakasi could proof to be a daunting task after police teargassed and battled supporters who had begun gathering at the venue.
WWW.UPESINEWS.CO.KE has learned that nobody was spared even those in their houses since there was tear gas thrown everywhere.
Three people shot
Three NASA supporters were shot by police as they tried to gain entry into the jacaranda grounds. They had engaged police in running battles on Tuesday morning even as tension continued to rise.
rThe venue has already been sealed off making it difficult for anybody to access the grounds.
Things have become even difficult after Nasa supporters blocked roads using stones and boulders making most of the roads impassable.
Nasa has organized a memorial to remember victims of police brutality during the electioneering period.
Mr Odinga, his co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Musalia Mudavadi, Siaya Senator James Orengo and other Nasa leaders were expected to address the rally.
The development comes after Nairobi County Police Commander Japhet Koome warned the opposition against holding the meeting.
However Nasa is of a different opinion saying that their meeting will go on since there was no law taht was been broken.NASA co-principal Moses Wetang’ula on Monday dismissed Mr Koome’s claims.
“We are planning prayers for our supporters who were shot dead during protests. We will also fundraise for the victims’ families so that they can hold a befitting send-off for their loved ones,” Mr Wetang’ula said.
Nasa has since claimed that 54 people have been killed by police between November 17 and 21 during the extended electioneering period.
