BY NAMULONGO PETER,NAIROBI,6TH OCT 2017-Business owners at the expansive Gikomba market in Nairobi are an angry lot after morning fire gutted down a large section of the famous market on Friday.
The business community which is counting losses amounting to millions of shillings have had a difficult time extinguishing the inferno which begun shortly after 3am.
Some of the traders we spoke to say the fire may have been started deliberately since their was trace of petrol in the debries.
The affected traders are now calling upon the county and national governments to come to their aid as they have lost all their stocks since most of them deal in deal second hand clothes which were burnt.
Earlier Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaries was at the scene as well as the deputy head of national disasters preparedness unit Puis Maasai.They both promised to ensure that a swift solution was found.Passaries has urged government to ensure that such cases of fires that have been witnessed for the better part of the year.
Until the time of going to press fire fighters among them Nairobi county fire engines and kenya red cross were battling the fire with little success .Nairobi County head of security Francis Munyambu said all county fire engines are at the scene but congestion and inaccessibility is slowing down the rescue process.
He says the county has also asked for help from the G4S firefighting team.
The National Disaster Management Unit has appealed to anybody and companies with fire engines and water boosters to help fight the fire that was quickly spreading to other structures around.
