BY NAMULONGO PETER,NAIROBI,16TH AUG 2017-Kenya National commission on Human right has strongly condemned the decision to shut down Kenya human rights commission KHRC which has operated in the country for decades.
Addressing the press on Wednesday 16 at the commission’s offices in Nairobi,KNCHR chair Kagwiria Mbogori has also raised issues with the raid on African Center for Open governance AfricoG saying it was the most unfortunate move and casts doubt on the commitment of government to give civil societies space to operate freely.
Kagwiria also commended the decision by acting interior CS Fred Matiang’i to order a stop to the harassment of civil society organizations that has also seen KHRC shut.
She has accused the NGOs Coordinating board chair Fazul Muhamed of baseless which hunt directed to civil society organizations in the country. She says it was unfortunate for Fazul to bring the same accusations against AfricoG having done so in January this year and in the year 2015.Bringing the same accusations that had been adjudicated by the court instead of appealing the same is questionable”she said.
Kagwiria also had issues with the grounds on which Fazul was still in office bearing in mind that the office of the Ombudsman had declared him unfit.Further more she claims his academic documents have been found to be questionable.
She now wants acting interior CS Fred Matiang’i to ensure that the public benefits operational act as soon as possible in order to help bring justice close to the citizens. She says Fazul was not in office legally since The board he currently chairs has since been disbanded following coming into operation of NGO act in 2013.
