BY KORIR JUMA,NAIROBI,14TH AUG 2017-Nairobi police commandant Japheth Koome has defended the police over claims that they have been shooting and killing protestors who have been demonstrating in various parts of Nairobi following declaration of Uhuru Kenyatta as the winner of presidential elections.Addressing the press on Monday 14th August in Nairobi Koome says police have had to shoot and kill criminals who are armed and mainly in self defense.”What you expect the police to do if they are attacked by AK47? do you expect them to just observe?”he posed.
According to Koome police have only killed rapists and robbers caught engaging in criminal acts.
He has urged Kenyans not to worry and go on with their lives as normal adding that police are ready to offer enough security.”Somebody is spreading propaganda to instill fear in people; I call on wananchi to be calm and enjoy life”.He said.
There has been pockets of protests in various parts of the country since Friday 11th August after the independent Electoral and boundaries commission IEBC announced that President Uhuru Kenyatta had won the presidential elections for the second term.The Opposition candidate Raila Odinga has since rejected the results claiming to be the genuine winner of the elections.He says IEBC rigged into office Kenyatta Illegally.
Police have been blamed for using exccessive force on protestors who have been protesting the move leading to deaths of hundreds.Most affected areas are Nairobi,s Mathare area,Kibera and Kwangware.Same cases have also been reported in kisumu,Homabay and Siaya counties.Kenya National Commission on Human rights KNCHR had last Saturday decried the use of excessive force on civilian by police ,claims that police have denied.
