We are ready for August 8 elections,IEBC assures

BY NAMULONGO PETER, NAIROBI, 28TH JULY 2017-The independent Electoral  and boundaries  Commission IEBC has assured Kenyans that it was ready for the August 8 elections.Addressing the press during the elections preparedness update Friday morning at the Bomas of Kenya,IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati said the commission had put up  necessary measures  to ensure the exercise was a success.

Chebukati sought to assure the nation on preparedness as far as several key areas are concerned on security he says the commission will post tow police officers at each polling station in the country to guard  the elections materials,on the likely hood that BVR Kitts fails the IEBC chair says the commission has a backup system to counter any such eventuality.

He also gave assurance that those who have already passed on will not vote in the coming elections.

Chebukati also explained   that measures were in place to counter any possibility of hacking the IEBC sever with a parallel  system to counter the same.He has further warned the electoral body staff to stay clear of any electoral malpractice during the elections as they risk prosecution.”Any of the commission’s staff should not engage in any malpractice during the exercise,as per election act they will face up ton one year in jail or a minimum of  a million fine,the commission will not protect any such persons” sad Chebukati.

 

The cases of fraud according to Chebukati had been minimized  with  the machine having the ability to  communicate to the commission any attempt to vote twice.”In case of fraud or voters voting twice, the machine will inform us and we will take action”he said.

As regards to the ballot papers ,Chebukati says  they can not be  forged due to quality material used.He also added that in areas with no power  the commission has made provision of satellite.The IEBC chairman has also added that Presidential result will be announced at constituency level.”We shall have a team in Bomas to receive results from the 47 counties; Verify results before announcing the winner”.he said.

He  also said  Commission has acquired primary and secondary data center to medicate the risk of systematic failures.
