BY JOHN WERU,NAIROBI,28TH JULY 2017-The catholic bishops in the country have urged all Kenyans to put the interests of the country and keep peace a head of elections.Addressing the press on Friday 28th July Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) have asked all political candidates to conduct their campaigns peacefully as the get the last stretch.The Bishops also applauded those who have so far conducted relatively peaceful campaigns in the country .
KCCB chairman Bishop Philip Anyolo called upon leaders to conduct themselves with decorum and sobriety in the remaining stretch of the campaigns in order to achieve cohesion and national integration.
“We need to create a peaceful environment, to demonstrate our patriotism for this country and ensure that all parts of Kenya are in peace,” said Bishop Anyolo.
The Catholic Bishops recognized the achievements so far made by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) under the circumstances, further calling on the commission to see to it that they secure just, fair transparent, credible and peaceful elections.
Bishop Anyolo also appealed to the youth to refrain from violence and instead engage in activities of peace building.
He also urged security agencies to intensify their preparedness in helping IEBC to secure just, transparent and peaceful elections.
John Cardinal Njue urged the media to strive to be instruments of Peace in their own capacities throughout the electioneering period adding that, the Conference of Catholic Bishops in Kenya are taking an active responsibility in ensuring that their role moves beyond merely observing elections to supporting dialogue for sustainable peace, institutional reforms and most importantly praying for Peace and Unity in the Nation.
The catholic Bishops have also urged all Kenyans to seize the opportunity to exercise their constitutional rights to elect leaders of integrity.
