BY SAMSON MBII,8TH JULY 2017-AFC Leopards have managed to qualify for Round of 16 of Shield tournament after beating Nairobi Stima 2-0 at Mumias Complex on Saturday July 8.
Aziz Okaka early goal set the ground favourable for AFC Leopards as he scored his debut goal in the third minute. Joshua Mawira got himself a goal immediately after the first goal as Leopards dictated the game especially in the third quarter. Mawira almost got the third after his header hit the cross bar.
Ivan Anguyo should have let Stima get their first goal through a well curved free kick that missed the goal by an inch. Both Majid Victor and Vincent Oburu had their long range attempts miss the goal mouth by inches too.
Stima dominated the second half first quarter as they searched for at least a consolation that seemed hard to get. Leopards sat back to jealously protect their two goal lead. But Michael Kibwage had to come out injured at the dying stages of the game and was replaced by Ramadhan Yakubu.
Meanwhile at Mbaraki Stadium Eldoret Youth booked their chance in the next phase after defeating Young Divers 2-0 in which the former dictated the match in its entirety. Kelvin Mwanzi scored for the Eldoret based side in the 10th minute before Kelvin Cheki added the second to seal Divers fate in the competition. The Divers had a good chance to get a conolation in the 47th minute but James Hussein sent the ball over the bar.
Elsewhere, GFE 105 trounced Karatina Homeboyz 2-1, where the win for GFE came from an own goal and Ayub Sila’s opener.
Sofapaka too joins fellow Kenya Premier League sides of Kakamega Homeboyz, Leoaprds and Kariobangi Sharks as they have beaten Western Stima 1-0 and have to thank their goalkeeper George Opiyo’s heroics during the the clash.
