BY NAMULONGO PETER,NAIROBI,28TH JUNE,2017-President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday 28th June announced the official opening of a multi-billion beer brewery in Kisumu county a move aimed at boosting investments in the county.
The plant is set to be a major source of employment to the locals.
Over 110,000 people will get direct and indirect jobs while over 30,000 farmers from 6 counties of Nyanza have already been contracted to provide sorghum and millet for beer brewing to the plant .
Speaking from State House Nairobi , President Uhuru said that a KSh 15 billion modern state of the art brewery will be opened to create more job opportunities for farmers and young people.
The brewery, which will be opened by East Africa Breweries Limited, will provide a source of livelihood for 110,000 people.
Kenyatta also said , 30,000 small-scale farmers have already been contracted to supply sorghum and millet to the brewery. The move will shift the dependence of subsistence farming to agri-business farming to raise rural incomes and boost food security.
“The farmers are from Kisumu, Siaya, Migori, Homa Bay, Makueni, Kitui and Tharaka Nithi. They have collectively earned KSh 2 billion a year from supplying beer making raw materials, a sum that will rise to KSh 6 billion if they take full advantage of this opportunity,” he said .
