BY EURIDICE,CORRESPONDENT,18TH JUNE 2017-The government has imported 50,000 metric tons of rice from China to be distributed as relief in areas hard hit by drought.
Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has revealed that the move is one of government’s additional intervention to deal with food shortage experienced in parts of the country after the inadequate rainfall experienced in the long rainfall season.
Kiunjuri says the consignment which has already arrived at the port of Mombasa will be distributed from next week.
He also noted that he was closely monitoring availability of the ninety shillings 2kg Unga to the Mwananchi at the same time assessing if millers have began receiving maize to process the much needed commodity.
The government remains categorical that those found inflating prices of the subsidized Unga will be prosecuted.
