BY CORRESPONDENT,16TH JUNE 2017-Four people have been killed and 11 others seriously injured on Friday when their vehicle run over a roadside bomb in Mandera.
Police have confirmed the incident with County Commissioner Fredrick Shisia saying it happened at 12pm when the Toyota Land Cruiser those who died were in was moving from Elwak to Mandera town.
“The vehicle operates on the road as a public service vehicle and was carrying 15 passengers when it stepped on what we suspect to be an IED,” he said.Mr Shisia said two chiefs were among the victims of the explosion.
“It is unfortunate that two of my chiefs were in the same vehicle and [one] is dead and the other is in critical condition,” he said.
He said the injured are admitted in Lafey Sub County Hospital.
The County Commissioner added that the scene of the explosion has been a hotspot a long time, however security agents are working on improving safety.
“We are soon hiring police reservists to be posted in areas perceived [as] hotspots, especially on the borderline, so that we contain the situation,” he said.
Last month, five police officers were killed after the county governor’s (Mr Ali Roba) convoy was attacked.
But he said there is no link between the two incidents, adding that investigations into Governor Roba’s incident are ongoing.
