BY KORIR JUMA,NAIROBI,7TH JUNE,2017-Opposition leader who is also the National Super Alliance presidential aspirant Raila Odinga on Wednesday, June 7, accused the Jubilee government of frustrating efforts to reduce the high cost of living despite putting some measures in place to mitigate it.
Raila who addressed the press at his capital hill office ,says the government ignored warning signs from various experts on the looming maize shortage so that they could create an avenue in which to make money.
“The government and cartels created a national crisis to enable themselves to profit from the situation. They conspired to import maize from Mexico when it could have been easily bought from Ethiopia which had just registered a bumper harvest of four million metric tonnes,” said Raila.
He also asked president kenyatta to personally take a flight to Ethiopia and negotiate with Addis Ababa government on how they can sell maize to Kenya. ”when he was lobbying for African country’s support because of ICC cases they went to Ethiopia for help i don’t know why it is very hard for him (referring to president Kenyatta) to go Ethiopia and bring food for hungry Kenyans”he said
Odinga said it was time to change tact on methodology used by government is addressing the scarcity of maize meal and the high cost of unga saying that since the importation of maize from mexco begun three weeks ago Kenyans are yet to be fully catered for since subsidized unga is not available with many Kenyans not able to access it as it was still scarce.
