Nurses hold demonstration-FILE
BY KORIR JUMA,CORRESPONDENTS,5TH JUNE,2017-Health services across the country were on Monday paralyzed in public hospitals after the nurses downed their tools.The Nurses claim the national government and the county governments have failed to honor the collective bargaining agreement reached between the Kenya National union of nurses,the national government and the council of governors early this year.
They claim the return to work formula which stipulated that they be given kshs 25000 allowance and other demands which was signed and agrred upon early this year ending a three months national wide strike has not been implemented to this point.They are also protesting failure to Upgrade nurses to grade B5.
Spot check done by UpesiNews.co.ke in various health centers has discovered that most facilities do not have nurses as most of them stay away from their working stations having joined their colleagues in the country.
In Jaramogi Oginga Hospital in Kisumu nurses have stayed away from their duties with only privately hired nurses working.The situation is the same in Mombasa,Eldoret and Bomet.
The ministry of health however says the CBA will be documented any time after it has gone through the due stages in various government bodies including the Salaries and remuneration commission.
The council of governors says it is yet to receive a letter from the salaries and renumiration commission SRC to allow them sign the CBA .Council of governors chair Josephat Nanok says the negotiations on the CBA which commenced in Dicember last year are still on going and expressed confidence that a solution will be found soon.
Nanok who addressed the press at the council of governors office in Nairobi Monday has urged nurses to go back to work as their grievances are addressed.
