Nurses hold demonstration-FILE

BY KORIR JUMA,CORRESPONDENTS,5TH JUNE,2017-Health services across the country were  on Monday  paralyzed in public hospitals after the nurses downed their tools. The Nurses claim the national government and the county governments have failed to honor the collective bargaining agreement reached between the Kenya National union  of  nurses, the national government and the council of governors early this year.

They claim the return to work formula which stipulated that they be given  kshs 25000 allowance and other demands which was signed and agrred upon early this year ending a three months national wide strike    has not been implemented to this point. They are also protesting failure  to  Upgrade  nurses to grade B5.

Spot check done by  in various health centers has  discovered that most facilities do not have nurses as most of them stay away from their working stations having joined their colleagues in the country.

In  Jaramogi Oginga Hospital in Kisumu nurses have stayed away from their duties with only privately hired nurses working. The situation is the same in Mombasa,Eldoret and Bomet.

The  ministry of health however says the CBA will be documented any time after it has gone through the due stages in various government bodies including the Salaries and remuneration commission.

The  council of governors says it is yet to receive a letter from the salaries and renumiration commission SRC to allow them sign the CBA .Council of governors  chair Josephat  Nanok  says the negotiations  on  the CBA which commenced in Dicember last year are still on going and expressed confidence that a solution will be found soon.

Nanok who addressed the press at the council of governors office in Nairobi Monday has urged nurses to go back to work as their grievances are   addressed.
