BY JOHN WERU/CORRESPONDENT,15TH MAY 2017-The government has come out to defend itself against claims from a section of politicians that it was doing business with the maize that arrived at the port of Mombasa last Friday.
Addressing the press at the port of Mombasa early Monday permanent secretary in the ministry of industries Patrick Mwangi termed the allegation as false and misplaced. He said the maize had been imported from Mexico and kept in modern warehouses in south Africa where it had been brought from.
He says the importation was done by private millers who have since received their shipment.According to Mwangi some of those millers are in Athriver,Nairobi and Mombasa.
He also refuted claims that the maize is yellow maize.”You can see the maize is white it is not yellow” he said. On Friday last week a ship carrying 29000 metric tonnes of maize purported from Mexico.
The move has however elicited mixed reactions across the social media and a cross section of the politicians who questioned the short period used to deliver maize from Mexico. For such a consignment to get into the country fro Mexico requires at least six months but the consignment is said to have been imported within three days.
