BY NAMULONGO PETER,NAIROBI,13TH APRIL 2017- The Orange Democratic Movement party has made true its threat and punished severely several politicians belonging to the party among them Migori Governor Zachary Obado and Nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro following the recent chaos in which several people were injured.
Obado was fined Sh2 million by the party’s disciplinary committee which also fined Ongoro Sh1 million and barred her from contesting the Ruaraka Parliamentary seat in which she was set to challenge incumbent MP T.J Kajwang.
Ongoro is also required to issue a public apology to the party and its leader Raila Odinga and can only vie in another constituency of her choice following the chaos that rocked Orange House when she led dozens of youths who attacked the party’s Executive Director Oduor Ong’wen.
The Migori Governor was fined over the violence in his county when Suna East MP Junet Mohammed convened a meeting that was to be addressed by ODM deputy leader Hassan Joho of Mombasa and Senators Anyang Nyong’o and James Orengo.
According to the Party Director of Communications Phillip Etale, a peace team will,” be established to deal with the Migori issue.”
Ongoro had last week led her supporters to protest the direct nomination handed to her rival Kajwang.
“I will be in NASA and I am not coming out of the race. No more intimidation. Enough of this nonsense,” she said.
Ongoro further claimed women aspirants were being taken for granted in ODM.
“Women candidates are being mistreated. I have fought for this party for a long time but anytime I want a seat I am told to do something else,” she said. “Let me fight this battle for the sake of women aspirants.”
Supporters of the two Nairobi politicians had earlier clashed in Mathare on March 16, leaving two people dead and seven injured.
“I went to the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and recorded a statement. I was under siege. Instead of this party walking the talk. I am told that he will be given a direct nomination while I have to look for another seat,” she said, adding she was not the aggressor.
ODM has also warned and reprimanded several other leaders who have been involved in causing violence.
