IEBC okays NASA to run parallel vote tallying center however…..

BY EURIDICE NZIOKA,NAIROBI,6TH APRIL 2017-The opposition National Super Alliance has now been allowed  by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to set up a parallel tallying center to monitor the results of the August presidential election.

Speaking after a  meeting with NASA principals, Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Moses Wetangula and Musalia Mudavadi, IEBC Chairman, Wafula Chebukati, said political parties and the media are free to monitor election results for their own use but not for announcement or broadcast.

The IEBC boss also stated that the two parties agreed that the mandate of announcing election results only lies with the Commission.

The move  comes just  days after Odinga announced that NASA would set up a national tallying centre that will receive the opposition presidential tally and announce its parallel results during the August 8th general election as a measure to monitor rigging.

Speaking during an ODM rally in Nairobi held at Kibera’s Woodley Grounds,NASA principal and ODM leader Raila Odinga cast doubt on the electoral body IEBC that it will conduct a free and fair election.

The opposition further intends to borrow a leaf from West Africa and deploy an election strategy dubbed ‘ adopt a polling station; where according to Odinga, 50 youth from NASA will be deployed to each polling station to guard the opposition votes and ensure all NASA supporters come out to vote.

On the planned nominations by ODM that are scheduled to kick off on Friday  in Busia, Bungoma and Machakos counties, Chebukati says the Commission will advise the party by Friday  on whether to continue with the exercise without the official gazettment of aspirants by the IEBC which was the main reason why the  commission was opposed to the move.

The opposition has little time remaining to name its presidential ticket holder with the poll body expecting the names early next month.
