World Radio Day marked amid calls for responsible journalism

BY NAMULONGO PETER,NAIROBI,28TH FEB,2017-Various stake holders in the radio industry in the country gathered in Nairobi Monday for this year’s world radio day celebrations.The meeting which was attended by among others information and communication cabinet secretary Joe Mucheru saw all who spoke make passionate call to all stake holders in the Radio sector to exercise caution especially as the country draw near to the general elections.The media fraternity has been urged to refrain from using the freedom of expression to incite Kenyans into violence.
Speaking during the official event held in Nairobi to mark the UNESCO day Cabinet secretary in the ministry of information and communication Joe Mucheru has called upon the players in the radio sector in the country and the media in general to use the platform to preach peace and unity in the country especially now that the August 8 polls are drawing nearer.
EXERCISE RESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM
Mucheru also cautioned journalists against abuse of freedom of expression while carryuing out their duties. Speaking at the same event media council of Kenya chief executive officer Haron Mwangi said all media practitioners need to be more careful at this time as if used irresponsibly radio has potential to cause political and tribal animosity as it was witnessed during and after the general elections of the year 2007.His sentiments were echoed by MCK deputy director Victor Bwire.The theme for this year’s celebration is Radio is you.
