BY KORIR JUMA,NAIROBI,23RD JAN 2017-A police reservist has been killed by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Mandera County in an attack that was carried out early Monday.
Eye witnesses say the attackers who were armed hurled improvised explosive devices into a building housing Equity bank Mandera branch before proceeding to deputy governor’s residence, where they engaged police reservists guarding the premises killing one of them.
The gunmen whose number could not immediately be established hurled explosives at a building housing Equity bank and a nearby eatery in what is suspected to be an attempted attack on no- locals who were at the building at the time of the attack.
The attackers then proceeded to the residence of Mandera deputy governor Omar Mohamed where they engaged police reservists guarding the premises in a fire exchange, killing one of them before fleeing.
Relatives of the slain reservists now want the government to apprehend the attackers and bring them to book.
This is the first attack in the border town of Mandera this year.
Elsewhere tension is high in Kerio valley after two people were shot dead in tribal clashes pitting Pokot and Marakwet communities over pasture and water.
The incident which took place at the bridge connecting Baringo and Keiyo counties left a mother of 4 and a man dead sparking tension, with one of the communities said to be planning retaliatory attacks.
The residents are now appealing to the national Government to intervene by providing alternative grazing areas and water to avert possible conflict between the two communities.
