BY CORRESPONDENT,MOMBASA,7TH JAN,2017-Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders have told the government to reinstate Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and his Kilifi colleague Amason Kingi’s security team immediately.

The six MPs from Coast region, during a press conference at Tamarid Village Hotel in Mombasa, described the move as cowardly; and meant to intimidate the opposition.

“If anything happens to our Governors and their immediate family members we will hold responsible those who ordered the withdrawal of their security details,” Rashid Bedzimba, Kisauni MP, said.

About 20 security officers assigned to the two county bosses have been recalled.

The legislators are Abdulswamad Nassir (Mvita), Suleiman Dori (Msambweni), William Kamoti (Rabai) Badi Twalib (Jomvu) and Mishi Mboko (Woman rep, Mombasa).

Mr Bedzimba said the move is illegal since due process was not adhered to.

“At around 2am, in a very uncouth manner, each of the officers were ordered over [the] phone to immediately return to their respective stations and units.

“There was no formal recalling but their commanders just issued a verbal instructions,” he said.

On his part, Mr Twalib said the governors have a right to be protected just like the president, his deputy and other leaders.

“As Mombasa governor, he has a constitutional right to security same as the President, Deputy President, Cabinet secretaries and other top officials. We don’t see why this right is being deprived from him,” he said.

This is the second time Governor Joho’s security is being withdrawn.
