Efforts by Doctors union leaders to hold meeting in Bomet face resistance

BY KORIR JUMA,NAIROBI,28TH DEC 2016-Kenya Medical Practioners and Dentists Union Secretary General Ouma Oluga has accused Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto of assaulting doctors who were attending a meeting at The Fair Hills hotel in Bomet County.

In a statement titled “man of cowardice”, the union boss said that the governor stormed their meeting in the company of 30 “goons” where he slapped the chairman, other branch officials and tore the clothes of a female doctor.

“The governor initially had removed his gun pointing at the Doctors to scare and disperse the meeting,” read the statement.

The union has vowed to take strong action against the governor, saying that they will ensure that the governor accounts for his intolerance and violence.

“Intimidation will not implement the CBA. But no amount of intimidation will stop doctors from having the CBA implemented,” read the statement.

He noted that journalists who covered the event had their cameras confiscated.

Doctors in the country went on strike 21 days ago to force the government to fully implement the collective bargaining agreement signed in 2014.

Various attempts by the government to end the strike have not borne fruit, with the doctors vowing to stay put until the CBA is implemented.

The strike has crippled services in all public hospitals in the country.

Meanwhile, doctors in 45 counties risk losing their jobs after county governments advertised for their replacements.
