Arsenal too strong for Benfica as it records 5-2 in emirates cup encounter

BY SAMSON MBII,29TH JULY 2017-Arsenal  proofed to powerful for Benfica on Saturday 29th July registering  a 5-2 win  in the Emirates Cup  match. 

Arsenal started well and dominated the game but it was Benfica who broke the deadlock in 10 minutes of play. Captain Mertesacker deflected Cervi’s low shot past Ospina to hand Benfica the lead. Arsenal were level 14 minutes later through Theo Walcott. Kolasinac robbed Pizzi the ball and chipped it into the path of Walcott who rifled it in from close range.

Arsenal then took the lead in the 32nd minute as Walcott grabbed a brace being assisted by Kolasinac who flicked the ball into the path of Coquelin on the left hand side of the box and the Frenchman threaded a pass into Walcott who placed it in an empty net making it 2-1.

Horrible defending from Arsenal gifted Benfica the second goal in the 40th minute. Mertesacker lost the ball on the edge of the box to Pizzi who found Jonas with his pass. The Brazilian effort was blocked but the ball fell to Salvio whose shot was deflected off Holding and into the back of the net.

Second Half

Arsenal regained the lead in the 52nd minute as Walcott’s shot was blocked by Lopez who tried to clear the ball but diverted it past his own keeper Julio Cesar.

Giroud extended Arsenal’s lead to 4-2 scoring a volley with his left foot after a fine pass from youngster Nelson.

Iwobi scored the fifth, Kolasinac was involved again, feeding Giroud who set the ball for Iwobi and the Nigerian dispatched a well-hit shot pass Cesar.
